Waste Reduction Week Highlights ‘06

All Across Canada

All across Alberta and Canada from October 16-22, 2006 communities, classrooms, businesses and individuals celebrated Waste Reduction Week (WRW) in both organized and independent events.

Launched in Fort McMurray

In Alberta, the week launched with the opening of the enhanced Timberlea Recycling Depot in Fort McMurray. The week also featured a recycling drive at select WHL games. It was also supported by a large number of independent events. For a complete listing visit wrwcanada.com.

WRW in Alberta was a team success. Over 75 schools, 15 municipalities, 15 WHL teams, 12 businesses, and thousands of individuals participated in campaigns involving local papers, broadcast Public Service Announcements featuring (then-)Environment Minister Guy Boutilier, and radio stations from around the province.

Reduce Your Waste-Line Challenges

42 school classes, several businesses and 8 new municipalities completed the Reduce Your Waste-Line Challenge in Alberta. We’re proud of their commitment and their results.

Three top prizes of $400 toward an environmental field trip go to:

  • Evansdale School, Edmonton
  • Fox Creek School, Fox Creek
  • Onoway Elementary, Onoway

Seven Runner-Up prizes for a choice of vermi (worm) or outdoor composter go to:

  • Mountain View Academy, Calgary
  • JF Dion School, Fishing Lake
  • Robina Baker Elementary, Devon
  • C Ian McLaren School, Black Diamond
  • Northmount School, Edmonton
  • Pollard Meadows Elementary, Edmonton
