GHG Offset Quantification Protocol for Recycling

Jun 21, 2011

The RCA is currently in the process of developing a Quantification Protocol, as defined in the “Alberta Offset System Protocol Development Guidance Document”. This Quantification Protocol will apply to the greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from the recycling of waste materials.

In the protocol, offsets occur at the stage where recycled materials replace virgin inputs within the manufacturing stage. As such, this protocol is of particular interest to manufacturers who have the potential to incorporate additional recycled feedstock into their process, as they can potentially claim the GHG credits associated with this activity.

The RCA is inviting manufacturers to attend an information session on GHG Credit
Opportunities Associated with Utilization of Recycled Feedstock. This session will be of interest to any manufacturer with the potential to incorporate recycled content into their manufacturing process.

The session will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre and is scheduled to run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. There is no charge, but space is limited, so please respond today to info@recycle.ab.ca if you are interested in attending. For more information, call 403.843.6563.

The session will cover development of the protocol, including how recycling translates into GHG emission reductions, and how manufacturers may be able to claim offsets for these reductions. Manufacturers with the potential to utilize recycled content feedstock will receive priority registration until June 27. Other interested parties will be placed on a waiting list, and will be notified by June 28 if they are eligible to attend.
