Ease My Load Campaign - for All Canadians

Have you met Waste Reduction Week in Canada’s mascot, Atlas? Atlas cutout graphic You know, the guy that carries the world on his shoulders. For thousands of years, Atlas has been happy to shoulder the burdens of the earth, but the amount of waste we produce makes his job even harder. Waste Reduction Week in Canada and the national 2010 sponsor, the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association want to help Atlas, and you can too. Join the Ease My Load campaign! It’s easy. From October 1 to November 15, 2010, Canadians are asked to show how they are easing Atlas’ load. Download the cut-out of Atlas (PDF, 359.83 Kb), and include him in your 3Rs activities. Make a short video or a digital picture, and upload it to the national website. Your videos and pictures will be shared with Canada and world.  Join the Ease My Load Campaign at www.wrwcanada.com/ease_my_load.

Recycle My Cell Challenge - for High Schools and Post-secondary Institutions Recycle My Cell logo

The Recycle My Cell national cell phone recycling program (www.RecycleMyCell.ca), run by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association wants to help ease Atlas’ load (see the national campaign above) by making sure that all our old and out-of-use cellphones, smartphones, PDAs, pagers and their batteries are properly recycled. From October 18 to November 30, 2010, students from 70 schools from six provinces participated in the Recycle My Cell Challenge and collected almost 4,000 wireless devices, as well as close to 200 kilograms of batteries and other wireless accessories. The school in each province that collected the most cell phones, based on student population, received a cash donation to support the school’s green initiatives, as well as a new smartphone that the Principal will award to a student who has shown outstanding leadership in environmental protection. To find out more, visit www.wrwcanada.com/recycle_my_cell.
Congratulations to Thorhild Central School in Thorhild, Alberta, for being one of the winning schools!
